On the eve of 69th Independence Day, the social service club of IIM-Bangalore – Vikasana organized a scholarship event for the children of contract workers at the campus. The club has been conducting the event for several years now, with contributions coming from IIM-B students. With the success of the event over time, the institute this year offered to contribute for the cause. Dean (Admin) – Mr Shainesh and CAO – Mr. Raghbir Singh were the driving force behind this initiative. Their efforts ensured a contribution of more than Rs. 6.3 lacs from the institute as against raising Rs. 2.4 lacs from IIMB student community in the previous year. More than 140+ students were felicitated this year by the Mr. Shainesh, Mr Raghbir Singh, Dean (Faculty) – Mr Ishwar Murthy and Professor Padmini Srinivasan.
The event began with a mesmerizing patriotic dance performance by 20+ boys and girls, all dressed in pure whites with saffron and green dupatta’s. The songs ‘Kuch Kariye’ and ‘Jai Ho’ filled the entire auditorium with the feeling of devotion. If not the flag hoisting, the dance performance was sure to instigate the feeling of nationalism and give goose-bumps. This was followed by a short speech by Prof. Padmini in Kannada. She talked about the importance of education in life, and how she would want to see the kids not just being felicitated at IIM-B but be here to study amongst all of us one day.
The faculty then distributed the certificates of achievement and the scholarship amount to the students, and not one kid walked off the stage without a cheer and a glorious round of applause. Not just kids, but the proud parents were a delight to watch. One could feel the importance such events hold in their lives, spending a day of vacation with kids in their moment of success.
Post the felicitation, the kids were engaged in a quiz competition, and unlike the PGP classroom, the kids raised their hands (that’s right!) and waited for their turn to answer. With each answer, chocolates went round the auditorium filling up the pockets, and with it I hope it filled their minds with unbounded dreams to chase.
