The Summers of 2019 is a series about the various categories of roles offered by companies for summer internships. We bring to you the experiences of interns from Consulting, Finance, Marketing, General Management, Product Management, Operations and E-commerce roles to understand a bit more about their work life. The articles are meant to give the reader a glimpse into the life of an intern, and maybe help the reader understand their own fit in that particular role.

Exhilarating! Yes, that’s what my internship was at Alvarez & Marsal(A&M), in a nutshell. From crunching numbers and solving client issues to playing cricket matches and singing aloud in restaurants with the team, the seven weeks have been truly indelible. Before the internship, consultancy mystified me, and now it is a cherished way of life for me.

Apart from the wide industry exposure and dynamic development, A&M offered me a safe nest, a place for rapid experimentation, and a guide to systemic improvement. During the selection process, A&M offered mentoring, and my buddy was emphatic about how A&M lets one spread their wings. After seven weeks with A&M, I cannot agree more with him. Personal development is deeply valued at A&M. A&M let me fly, but it always kept the radar in sight. It let me explore myself, but ensured that I did not get hurt. It even let me define and push the boundaries, but it always ensured that I have the necessary capabilities. A&M trusted me, and I trusted A&M. I wanted to reach the sky, and A&M enabled me to go beyond it.

A&M taught me that if one wants to learn, then there is no end to it. The open culture of A&M is worthy of being experienced. A&M allotted us client-facing roles. Each one of the interns was placed in a client office for the entire duration. My project was to optimize man-power allocation across client locations. Although I was an intern, I was free to interact with the client, as and when needed. I interacted with very senior-level executives from the client-side. Although the client was based out of Mumbai, I needed some data, for which I went to Delhi. Our alumni keep telling us how travel is part of consultant’s life and even within the short span of internship A&M let me get every flavor of it. There was never any interference in my work from A&M side, even then I never felt isolated. Everyone in A&M is very approachable and helpful. Whenever I had any doubt, I reached out to the A&M network, and they have always helped me in finding the way forward. My manager was truly inspirational, and he always had my back. He let me think beyond my current scope and come up with ideas which can be of value to the client. After the internship period, when everyone was looking forward to returning to our beloved campus, I felt sad for not getting to work the next day.

The thing that I loved most about my internship was when the whole team started singing in restaurants, and the whole restaurant joined us. Yes, that happened quite a lot of time! The team chemistry was scintillating. I think I played cricket after more than 10 years there and I reminisced about how I used to play with my cousins. Nothing is better than a splash of childhood in your internship days.

Thank you, A&M, for making me part of you and bestowing on me a wonderful internship experience.
