I did my internship in the Real Estate team of The Blackstone Group. Blackstone is one of the largest real estate private equity and investment management firms globally, with $140 billion of assets under management. The scale of the investment is one of their key strengths. The team in India is based in Mumbai, with a very small headcount. However, due to the Covid-19 led lockdown, the internship was remote.
Initially, I was slightly worried about how the remote internship would work out because I was entirely new to the firm’s practices, internal models, formatting styles, etc. Whatever face-to-face interaction I had with the few team members was only during the summer recruitment process. Nevertheless, unlike my reservations about the remote working, everything went very smoothly. The internship program was well designed and suited for remote working. I was assigned mentors whom I could reach out to without any hesitation. They were just a call away and helped me with everything very patiently. I was given enough time to learn, understand, and work on my projects.
During this internship, I have learned a lot about the Real Estate sector. Through my projects, I have developed an understanding of the valuations and key metrics used in this sector. I got to work on a few investment opportunities, where I assisted in building financial models and presentations. Since the firm makes large scale investments, there is an immense focus on details and consistency. This requires one to be as comprehensive as possible in evaluating a potential deal. I also worked on the Real Estate market dynamics in India for the next few years, which gave me a great perspective of this market.
I am glad that all the work I have done is being used in the firm’s decision-making process. There were times when I could feel the heat of the work and the clock ticking, but the Blackstone team’s constant support helped me conquer those moments. This internship was an amazing experience of a lifetime for me.
