The Public Policy Club, IIM Bangalore organized the 2019 edition of the annual Model United Nations (MUN) Conference of IIM Bangalore on 16th and 17th February 2019. The event grew in size and scale from last year as two committees were simulated this time and the participation doubled to over 75+ delegates from across the country. The participants included undergraduate students, working professionals, school students and delegates from IIMB.
Shivam Gupta, a PGP 1 student served as the Secretary-General for this edition of IIMB MUN, and Arpan Ghosh was the Deputy Secretary-General. The two committees simulated were the Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC), which had spirited and meaningful discussions on the agenda “Reduction of the Gender Pay Gap and Ensuring Equal Opportunities for all”, and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which discussed the topic of “Addressing International Migration and Humanitarian Crisis in the current Time”. A distinguished Executive Board (EB) of highly experienced MUNers was empaneled to judge the two committees.
The delegates had a healthy discussion, facilitated by the EB. Some really great messages were also passed via chits. Many of the participants were first or second-time MUNers, so the EB was also careful to keep everyone on board and clarified all doubts.
Cash prizes were disbursed to the winners in each committee which included the Best Delegate, the High Commendation, and two Special Mentions. To encourage school students to participate in MUNs, a special Young Student Special Mention was also awarded. An Honourable Mention was awarded in the UNHRC because the competition was very close.
The participants engaged in debates, lobbied for the country they represented and learned valuable lessons in diplomacy. Great friendships were formed, networks created. The event was a wonderful experience for the participants, judges and the secretaries as well.
The Public Policy Club (PPC) is based on the reality that governance and policy are integral part of business and life in general. It provides a platform for students to engage with the government on various public issues. It conducts various events and sessions by eminent personalities to sensitize the student community about matters pertaining to public welfare and development. Some of the prominent events this year included case competitions and quizzes during Eximius & Vista, speaker sessions by Varun Gandhi (Member of Parliament) and Harish Damodaran (National Editor, The Indian Express), a Public Policy Summit “Utthan” in association with PGPPM batch, and the 2019 edition of IIMB MUN.
