“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
At IIM Bangalore, we are committed to creating value-oriented leaders for tomorrow. According to the United Nations, the key challenge any growing economy faces is to achieve dual objectives of economic as well as environmental growth. Thus, while addressing the growth of the institute, it is also important to pay attention to the ecosystem we live in. Moreover, Article 51 A (g) of the Constitution of India (under Fundamental Duties of a citizen) states that – “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India… to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife, and to have compassion for living creatures”.
IIMB is a 100-acre oasis with its all-stone architecture, lush, verdant woods, and landscaped gardens and home to several species of rare flora and fauna. As denizens of this planet, it is our responsibility to look out for the welfare of the other species which co-exist with us. Though we have several clubs on campus for social welfare activities and maintaining a clean eco-system, we did not have any society exclusively for animal welfare related activities. PAWS was created to bridge this gap.
The vision of People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is to foster positive relationships between the animals, their habitat, and the humans on the campus and to ensure that the animals are treated humanely and responsibly. The mission is to strive towards maintaining appropriate standards of accommodation, feeding and general care and assurance of freedom from harassment, discomfort and pain for animals.
We achieve this through the various events we conduct within campus like monitoring regular maintenance, food and vaccination of the animals in coordination with the administration, arranging health check-up inside the campus, creating a complaint management system on a student accessible portal and trying to solve them through coordinating with administration, vets, NGOs,etc., conduct a census and maintain a register of flora and fauna of the campus and many more.
PAWS also conducts many competitions and award functions as a channel to help the residents recognize the beauty of the wildlife like recognizing efforts from the IIMB student community for notable contribution to animal welfare, organize bird watching walks with environment club and work towards improving the habitat nature for the avian species inside campus, etc
The main initiatives are driven towards spreading awareness. We invite distinguished speakers on important days like World Animal Day to speak about animal welfare activities and spread awareness, educate incoming batches about do’s/don’ts/ animal laws and even maintain a Sighting Board – where the daily sighting of the avian and other fauna will be updated.
The year round activities help us not only grow as a club but more importantly also spread the knowledge and idea of treating animals with care and compassion that is deserving of these amazing creatures who make the life at IIM Bangalore a little bit more sweeter.
