“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They are made of sweat, determination and guts.”
– Dan Gable
As the sun broke over the green campus of IIM Bangalore, the trained contingents from the southern institutes of IIM Kozhikode, IIM Trichy and IIM Visakhapatnam descended into the stonewall boundaries to compete for the championship trophy of the season – Sangram’18. The 3-day battle encompassed 22 sports being played by over 600 students who had put in all the practice for months to be ready to fight it out and bring glory to their respective institutes.
Started decades ago to encourage the spirit of sports, Sangram, which means war in Hindi, is a southern inter-IIM sports competition that is conducted annually between the aforementioned four b-schools in the country. This year, the tournament was held at IIM Bangalore from 2nd to 4th November 2018. For the inaugral ceremony, Mr. Vijay Lancy, CEO Prakash Padukone Sports Management, was the esteemed chief guest and cordially gave Sangram’18 an official start while emphasising the importance of sports and physical fitness in our lives. The weekend saw teams playing as one to win each battle of games. The sports ranged from Badminton to Volleyball and had players playing late into midnight, finding strength somehow to showcase their talent, no matter the time or opponent.
This year, Women Futsal was the new game introduced that had good participation from the teams. The girls really did bend it like Beckham and broke the prejudices of sports not being for females. In fact, the strength, rigor and determination of the women sportspersons was a joy to watch. The men matches were also, obviously, much cheered for and in spotlight through the three days. Memories were made as students grouped up to support their friends play and watch those friends in turn support them when they did.
After the trials of the three day matches, the tally stood at IIM Bangalore winning the tournament and bringing back home the trophy with 15 gold medals, IIM Kozhikode bagging the second position with 4 golds, IIM Trichy coming third with 2 golds and IIM Visakhapatnam finishing fourth. But no matter the positions, all the teams were equal when it came to fighting for their college, never giving up and that is what this is all about.
The closing note much mention the beginning point of all the games – the Sports Council. The team got some much-deserved applause for organizing the whole event smoothly, ensuring no hassles were there for the home team and the guest teams alike. All in all, the three days brought together the teams like no other event. After all, that is what sports does to you. It builds strength, character and bonds. So here’s to never ending Sangram that will build our uniqueness and unity.
