CONSULTING IN STRATEGY&
Working at Strategy& was both extremely challenging and immensely fun at the same time. Working for a B2B telecom operator client, I had to balance various interests of different verticals within the client. The project depended heavily on managing stakeholders across different geographies. I had to deliver several workshops for educating the client in multiple locations.
Working out of their Mumbai office, my stay was at the Oberoi Hotel at Nariman Point. And being the IPL season, I would regularly see the teams, who were all provided accommodation at the hotel, making their way to and from the battlefield. I had to travel regularly too, visiting clients at a variety of places.
Like all consulting projects, the work hours were quite hectic. I had to work on many weekends as well. But this was balanced pretty well by the work culture of Strategy&. I was treated as a full time employee and given major responsibilities. The organization was extremely non-hierarchical, with the people being very friendly, supportive. Their unofficial motto was to work as hard as humanly possible, but party even harder. But of course, the company expected quality work in return.
My internship project specifically focused on designing the future-state business processes for the client’s supply chain. This involved revamping their end-to-end supply chain, from sourcing, to purchase, to payment. I worked on a range of categories including chalking out processes for supplier evaluation, detailing processes to be followed for any purchase route, and much more. Highly technical work. I spent a lot of time researching on newer and better technologies used in modern day supply chains. I had to make several calls with experts across the globe to gain good information on the same.
The project was very engaging and provided me with deep insights about the procurement process of a firm. The width of experience that I got on the project, ranging from analysis of the yearly spends of the company to multiple client interactions (end users to senior management) to presenting our solutions to the management, was the highlight of my internship.
I was expected to have keen business acumen, hypothesis driven problem-solving skills, and advanced excel skills, like working with pivot tables, VBA programming and modelling, came in very handy. The internship helped me to work on developing interpersonal relationships with various stakeholders and gave me some valuable lessons on teamwork and leadership. Overall, my stint in Strategy& was an unforgettable experience and I cannot wait to go back and work with them again.
