Unmaad ’17, IIM Bangalore’s annual cultural fest kicked off today with the theme being “The Island of Dreams”. Unmaad, assuming a cooler avatar this year, offers a refreshing break that transcends participants to their dreamland in line with the theme. The vibrantly decorated campus came to life as thousands of participants brimming with excitement made their way in. These three days disseminated with a myriad of events is sure to keep the audience engaged. There’s dramatics, music performances, street plays and dances for the ones who flirt with art, debates to see who comes the closest to matching Frank Underwood’s verbosity, quizzes which will be a test of mental prowess and fashion shows for the fashionistas. For the first time, ever, Unmaad will host the World Cultural Fiesta, which will have four artists of international repute performing for the exuberant crowd.
In the run-up to Unmaad, a special endeavor was made to highlight the importance of organ donation. The “Gift a Life” campaign across Bangalore, propagated awareness for organ donation. The campaign proved to be a huge success with students from different colleges signing up for the same, thus embracing the idea of improving and saving lives of many others.
Day 1 of the fest kicked off with the much awaited ‘Nukkad Naatak’ or Street Play. Enthusiasm enveloped the crowd as teams swept the audience off their feet with catchy phrases and songs, crisp script and humor. Connecting with the audience almost instantly, the ten shortlisted teams drove home the messages of socio-economic, cultural, ethical and environmental issues. Every team electrified the audience with their performance, with the Aina dramatics team from MIT Manipal stealing the thunder and emerging winner, having brilliantly portrayed the stigma associated with superstitions.
Amidst the fast-paced Day 1 at Unmaad, the food village played host to every palate and fulfilled every foodie’s dream. With exquisite cuisines from across the world, one could just not stop thulping!
As the day unfolded, the much-anticipated talent hunt to spot Mr. and Ms. Unmaad saw participants charm their way through multiple feats, impressing judges with their repertoire. Participants selected based on an online poll displayed their talent with eight of them advancing to the final round tomorrow.
The trademark Unmaad Open Quiz was conducted by the effervescent Rohit Suresh. It witnessed an enthusiastic participation from over 50 teams. The quiz was organized in two rounds with nine teams qualifying for the final round. Questions pushed participants to the peaks of their mental capacities with many twists, layers and hidden clues. The team fresh from victory in the 2016 Tata Crucible Business Quiz – Santhosh and Naveen – came first.
As the sun set, the Colors of Youth (COY) Nite unfolded to the mesmerizing performances by ‘The Local Train‘ and ‘Agam‘. The rock band from Delhi left the crowd head-banging while Agam performed with their characteristic vibrancy that had the audience crooning too!
Other events for the day included solo singing- Swar, solo instrumental- Fervour, a plethora of extempore events and the Latin dance workshop that had participants sway with elegance.
Unmaad ‘17 promises to generate enhanced momentum and enthusiasm as we move into the second day of the 3-day fest. With cooler events lined up across all categories, it lives up to its promise – guaranteed fun!
