The woods are lovely dark and deep…

Prashant Gutch (PGP 2011-13) on his preparation for the IIMB interviews.

Woods are lovely and deep

The woods are lovely dark and deep

But I have promises to keep

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep

These 4 lines are the closest to how I can sum up my experience post CAT. I took CAT in 2011 and was one of those lucky ones who scored well. I scored 99.99 percentile and stood 9th in India but I knew it very well that a seat at one of the 3 prestigious IIMs was by no means a surety.

Spastics Day at IIMB

Spastics Day

Every year Vikasana, the social initiatives club of IIM Bangalore, invites students from Spastics Society of Karnataka to spend a day with us on campus. The Spastics Society of Karnataka is a  Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to the welfare of people with neuro-muscular and developmental Disabilities.  The Society provides a comprehensive package of diagnostic and intervention services to people with cerebral palsy, autism, mental retardation, multiple disabilities and learning disabilities.

This year too we had 30 students visiting our campus. Students of IIMB enthusiastically took part in the interaction. Through this program, the students of IIMB get an opportunity to interact and understand the issues faced by the students from the Spastic Society. The students from the Spastic Society in turn get to spend a fun filled day at the beautiful IIMB campus leaving everyone happy and content at the end of a day well spent. Games like musical chair, cricket, pass a ball were organised and few motivational videos were played for them. During the course of the day, the volunteers had formed close bonding with the children and when it was time for the children to go back, there was a silent tear in the eyes of many!

Take the Plunnge…

plunngeAugust 1st, 2012 – I enter my fifth year at IIM Bangalore this month. From a travelling salesman in Qualcomm, to a nobody today, it has been a fantastic joyride – something I really feel blessed that happened to me.  I call this state a “Plunnge” from where I was to where I wanted to be. And I wrote a book on the same topic (More details on www.plunnge.com ) which has 15 stories of ordinary people like me. We all were doing regular jobs but always wanted to do something else – something that is our passion.

What is the relevance of Plunnge and our PGP students? I don’t exactly know the answer because I didn’t write it keeping an audience and objective in mind. I just documented my experiences in this journey. But I see a fascinating trend in our students that makes Plunnge an interesting case in point for them to consider. As our country is becoming economically noticeable by the world, the newer generations are also becoming very different from the previous ones. And thanks to a massively interconnected world through internet, this generation has begun to choose careers in a very different way than how mine or the one before me did. I am thrilled to see students dropping off the placement process to follow their passions – some open companies with other fellow batch mates or friends or some just space out for a year, travel, see the world and take time to decide what to do next.
