The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore recently played host to one of academic India’s most famous Sporting rivalries – Sangram 2012, a veritable war of the elite sports teams from three premier business schools in Southern India – the Indian Institutes of Management at Bangalore, Kozhikode and Trichy.

Since its inception in the year 2004, the intensity of Sangram has been unmatched, and the euphoria unparalleled. Traditionally, each campus plays host every alternate year and gives an opportunity to students from the other campus to establish their superiority. The 7th edition of Sangram was a trend setter in a number of ways. While there were 20 sporting events instead of the usual 16, with our national game Hockey and India’s traditional game Kho-Kho being added to the sports extravaganza this year, there also was the added thrill because of the fact that to add to all the excitement of the much awaited sports encounters between IIM Kozhikode and IIM Bangalore, we also had IIM Trichy as the third competitor in the battle of sporting supremacy among the IIMs of the South!

With the pride and honor of their alma maters at stake, the captains and players went through a rigorous training schedule, all the while balancing it with their highly demanding academic schedules. In the words of IIM Bangalore’s Sports Secretary, “Inter-IIM meets are unique in the aspect that they provide us a chance to interact, compete with other IIMs and build strong networking relations via Sports. IIM Bangalore has proved its sporting supremacy by comprehensively winning Sangram last year. To make the event bigger, this year we decided to include IIM Trichy”! How true, considering that sporting rivalries often turn out to be the benefactors of lifelong friendships by bringing in passionate, energetic and highly motivated people who think alike on the same page.

For three full days, the campus of IIM Bangalore took a break from the hectic curricular activities as students and staff members geared up to support the various teams in their attempt to add yet another gem to IIMB’s formidable crown, decorated with a rich history of sporting glories! Clichéd as it might sound; most of the wars went to the wire with each IIM having their moments of victory. However, it was the tenacity and athletic supremacy of the teams of IIM Bangalore which helped IIMB clinch the title of the Champions of Sangram yet again!

The battle has been won, but clearly bigger challenges lie ahead as the teams from IIM Bangalore now focus their attentions towards the mega inter-IIM sporting league- Sangharsh -to be hosted by IIM Calcutta early next year!
